Defending Outnumbered
Foundation (5-11), Youth Development (12-17), Senior (18+)
6 Players | Defensive Third
The Set Up- 2 gates positioned for defenders to dribble through, line marked for attackers who can only shoot once passed it
- 2 defenders (Yellows) either side of the goal, 3 attackers positioned at the other end & GK in goal
- A defender starts by passing the ball to the 3 attackers, who aim to score as quickly as they can
- Both defenders (Yellows) come out to defend against the Reds
- Defenders win possesion they look to dribble through one of the two gates
Coaching Points- Delay - delay the attack where possible by closing down space between defenders & opponents
- Deflect - deflect away from central areas of the pitch, force attackers wide
- Deny - deny any passing or shooting opportunities by staying compact and narrow
- Defend - Last resort be brave to get your body in the way, stay disciplined in shape/compactness
- Press the ball - move & press to cut the forward pass first, quick approach & then controlled & slow
Team/Player Considerations- Attackers - Double goals if you score within 10 seconds of receiving the ball
- Each time the defenders score, they receive double goals
- Defenders will get a bonus goal if they delay the attackers for more the 30 secs
- Try & keep attackers high up the pitch for as long as possible
- How can you stay compact? - Stay within 5-10 yards of each other
- What might happen if a defender is too eager to press? - Could get left exposed in behind
Step it up- Use the marked line as an off side line
Make it easier- Put a Red player in goal, or use as a target player for the defenders - becomes a 2v2
